Juniors Coach

The New Bedford Rowing Center “NBRC” is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote and develop the sport of rowing throughout Greater New Bedford, fostering fitness, teamwork, and personal growth among individuals of all ages and abilities. We aim to inspire a shared sense of pride, belonging, and stewardship, as well as build a legacy of rowing excellence that resonates throughout our community and beyond.

 

NBRC is looking to hire a Juniors Coach starting in April 2026. In partnership with the New Bedford Public Schools, in 2025 NBRC was one of only two national applicants awarded the ERG ED® grant from the George Pocock Foundation to bring indoor rowing to the physical education curriculum of traditionally underrepresented youth. Our Juniors (ages 12 – 18) program is an extension of our efforts to engage community youth by offering Learn-to-Row, recreational and competitive opportunities during the on-the-water season. Reporting to the Board Chair & Vice Chair the Juniors Coach will oversee all Juniors programming and will draw support from our current staff of assistant coaches and seasonal hires. An ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills to motivate, support, and advance our rowers at all levels. This is a part-time position (no benefits). 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fostering a safe, inclusive, and motivating team environment 
  • Oversee NBRC’s drafted Juniors Program that includes learn-to-row and recreational offerings, including competitive opportunities and the 3-week summer SeaLab program with New Bedford Public Schools
  • Coordinate with Assistant Junior Coaches to deliver programming and ensure ample coverage
  • Maintain all safety standards and NBRC protocols
  • Routine maintenance of equipment and upkeep of NBRC boathouse
  • Report to Board Chair and Vice Chair and regularly check-in on programming development
  • Provide a positive and nurturing team environment and uphold USRowing SafeSport standards

SCHEDULE

  • Spring hours (May – Jun) approximately 6 – 8 hours, primarily weekends
  • Summer hours (Jul – Aug) approximately 12 – 15 hours Mon thru Thur afternoons, Sat AM
  • Sea Lab hours (3 weeks in July) approximately 6 – 8 hours Mon thru Thur AM
  • Fall hours (Sep – Oct) approximately 6 – 8 hours, schedule TBD

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of prior Juniors rowing coaching experience is required
  • US Rowing Level 2 coaching certification and boater’s license
  • Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, and actively engage in training and mentorship opportunities
  • First Aid/CPR and SafeSport certification 
  • Compensation: $30-35/hour; Compensation commensurate with experience and responsibilities
  • Employment subject to successful completion of CORI background check
