The New Bedford Rowing Center “NBRC” is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reunite river and residents by promoting and developing the sport of rowing in Greater New Bedford along the Acushnet River, fostering physical fitness, teamwork, and personal growth among individuals of all ages and abilities. Our goal is to establish the Acushnet River as a focal point of community life, providing accessible and inclusive opportunities for all to engage in the sport of rowing. We aim to inspire a shared sense of pride, belonging, and stewardship, as well as build a legacy of rowing excellence that resonates throughout Greater New Bedford and beyond.

NBRC is looking to fill the Head Coach position starting in 2025. Our Head Coach will be expected to build relationships with local schools and youth organizations to recruit new rowers as the NBRC establishes its youth/junior program. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate proper rowing and coxswain technique and possess strong communication skills to motivate, support, and advance our rowers at all levels of competition. This is a part-time position (no benefits).

Responsibilities

  • Recruit for and coach the competitive and novice, Junior teams ages 12-18 years.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of Youth and Junior programs, including scheduling, recruiting, rower & parent communication
  • Coach the competitive and LTR (learn to row) Masters sessions
  • Recommend potential Assistant Coaches to Board of Directors for both Juniors and Masters programs
  • Supervise Assistant Coaches
  • Maintain all safety standards and NBRC protocols
  • Routine maintenance of equipment and upkeep of NBRC boathouse
  • Report regularly to the Board of Directors on programming and partake in monthly board meetings
  • Provide the Safety Committee with written rowing safety Incident Reports
  • Perform out of town regatta registration, select crews (rower and cox), assign boats and seats
  • Attend all regattas as primary coach; organize assistant coaches and volunteers
  • Provide a positive and nurturing team environment and upholds USRowing SafeSport standards
  • Run outreach programs at local schools to recruit junior rowers

Schedule

  • January – February & December | 6 hours per week
  • March – May, September – November | 16 hours per week
  • June – August | 32 hours per week
  • Some weeks may require fewer than the posted hours; weeks with regattas will likely require more
  • On-water practice times vary; Weekday programming from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. & weekend programming from 6:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Timing subject to change.
  • Juniors and Masters Team practices are held Saturday, Sundays, Tuesdays & Thursdays
  • Summer programming will be Monday through Friday
  • Out of town regattas are tbd.
  • Organizing occasional evening workshops or video review with teams is strongly encouraged
  • At the end of the 2025 season, there will be a performance review. Pending review there is the potential for this offer to be extended to 2026 and beyond

Qualifications

  • Significant rowing and/or coaching experience
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and rigging
  • Knowledge of safety procedures
  • Ability to operate a coach’s launch
  • US Rowing Level 2 coaching certification preferred (or willingness to attain certification in 6 months)
  • Current boater safety card, First Aid/CPR and SafeSport certification
  • Compensation: $30-$35/hour; Compensation commensurate with experience and responsibilities.
  • Employment subject to successful completion of CORI background check
